Headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, Europol is the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation. Its mission is to support the EU Member States in preventing and combating all forms of serious international and organised crime, cybercrime and terrorism. Europol also works with many non-EU partner states and international organisations.
Large-scale criminal and terrorist networks pose a significant threat to the internal security of the EU and to the safety and livelihood of its people. The biggest security threats come from terrorism, international drug trafficking and money laundering, organised fraud, the counterfeiting of euros, and trafficking in human beings.
Europol’s work usually consists of dealing with crimes that require an international approach and cooperation between several countries, inside and outside the EU. Europol supports law enforcement agencies in different EU Member States from its headquarters in The Hague using sophisticated crime-fighting tools and technologies. The Agency also deploys analysts and specialists to support ongoing operations in Member States.
Innovation is one of Europol’s strategic priorities. As part of this, Europol established in 2019 a dedicated Innovation Lab to support the law enforcement community in the area of innovation. The Innovation Lab aims to identify, promote and develop concrete innovative solutions in support of the EU Member States’ operational work. These will help investigators and analysts to make the most of the opportunities offered by new technologies, for instance by finding new and better ways to analyse and visualise large amounts of data to support investigations.
Europol is designed to operate in partnership with law enforcement agencies, government departments and the private sector. Currently Europol hosts at its Headquarters in The Hague more than 1700 Europol staff members, Liaison officers from Member States and third states and organisations, Seconded National Experts, trainees and contractors, coming from 54 different countries from all over the world.
